I just wanted to talk up the book I’m reading again, Catastrophe. The David Keys book is very compelling reading.

Perhaps one reason I segued into it was something I saw on the news, a reporter was talking about our dependence on electricity, a dependence which didn’t exist a mere 100 years ago. Keys’ book deals with history and covers periods of several hundred years in different parts of the world.

It made me think how history is happening all around us every day, the question is whether or not we have the faculties to take note of it. Historical trends aren’t that apparent in a day, a week, a month, a year or a decade - they’re apparent over centuries, a measure of time beyond the scope of our short lives. Decisions made long ago are impacting us today and likewise, decisions we make today will impact the lives of our descendants through the centuries. We just need to “pop” the bubble of the present.
